Knights cannot slow down hot shooting of Saint Mary's in road loss

WINONA, Minn. – Despite a combined 29 points from Jill Yanai (Sr./Glendale, Calif./Glendale) and Jasmine Choi (So./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo), the Carleton College women's basketball team was unable to keep up with the hot shooting of Saint Mary's University, ultimately falling, 85-58 on the road.
 
Yanai led the Knights (4-7, 3-5 MIAC) with 17 points, hitting 7-of her-16 shots to go along with a pair of steals. Choi also reached double figures with 12 points, half of which came in the opening quarter.
 
Saint Mary's (4-7, 3-5 MIAC) entered the day shooting 33 percent overall and 31 percent from long range this season, then proceeded to make 51 percent (18-of-35) of its field goal tries in the first half, including an impressing 10-of-17 (59 percent) performance from 3-point range over the first 20 minutes. Overall, the Cardinals shot 48 percent in the contest compared to 29 percent for Carleton, including a 2-of-14 stat line (14 percent) from long range.
 
Trailing 18-11 with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter, Carleton put together a 15-0 run over the next three-and-a-half minutes of game action to build the Knights' largest lead of the day at 26-18.
 
Saint Mary's quickly erased the deficit with a 15-2 run of its own, part of an extended 34-9 surge that spanned the last nine minutes of the half.
 
The Cardinals led 52-35 at the break and extended their advantage to as 31 points in the second half.
 
Brooklyn Paulson, the MIAC's leading scorer, finished with a game-high 24 points to pace Saint Mary's. Ashley Streveler, a 34-percent shooter from outside the arc, went 5-for-5 from long range in the first half and concluded the day with 15 points in helping the Cardinals to their
highest point total of the season.
 
Emma Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) led the Knights from the charity stripe, hitting all four of her free throws. She also racked up five assists and four rebounds. Isabelle Henry (So./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) added six points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
