NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's swimming & diving team won six events but lost a close dual meet, 161-139, to visiting Gustavus Adolphus College.
Julia Luljak (Jr./Baltimore, Md./Park School) and
Kapani Kirkland (Sr./Mendota Heights, Minn./Convent of the Visitation) both won twice as the Knights took part in their first competition of the new year.
"This meet was exactly what we were looking for at this point in the season," said Carleton head coach
Andy Clark. "We haven't had a full meet since early December, and we knew Gustavus would help provide a level of competition where we would need to have big swims and dives."
Luljak prevailed in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events. In the shorter race, she clocked a time of 1:11.53, just off her season-best time. She won the longer race by more than two seconds, touching the wall at 2:34.67.
Kirkland and
Brenna Russell (So./Andover, Minn./Andover) finished 1-2 on both the 1- and 3-meter diving boards. In the process, they established season-best scores in both events. On the lower board, Kirkland posted a score of 230.20 while Russell registered a score of 222.30. Their 3-meter scores were 227.60 and 219.70, respectively.
Madi Smith (Sr./Denver, Colo./Denver School of Science and Technology-Stapleton) trimmed nearly 10 seconds off her season best in winning the 1000-yard freestyle as she covered the distance in 11:23.85.
Alison Cameron (Sr./Reno, Nev./Reno) had the other triumph for Carleton, winning the 200-yard butterfly with a season-best time of 2:18.24
