Clara Mayfield’s strong start at NCAA Championships hampered by high temperatures

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Carleton College sophomore Clara Mayfield (Manhattan, Kan./Manhattan) got off to a strong start in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, but with race-time temperatures above 80 degrees despite starting at 8:30pm local time, she was unable to finish the race.

Mayfield ran in the back of the main pack for the first portion of the scheduled 25-lap race. As other runners tired, she slowly worked her way up from 14th to as high as seventh place with seven laps remaining. She sat eighth when she was forced to drop out with little more than three laps to go.

Parley Hannan of Ithaca College won the race with a time of 34:33.53. The top eight finishers in the event took home All-America recognition.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Mayfield and Amanda Mosborg (Sr./Bloomington, Minn./Edina) both qualified for the 5,000-meter run which will be contested on Saturday, May 29 at 2:00pm CT/3:00pm ET.
