MOORHEAD, Minn. – Spurred on by double-doubles from both
Grace Perret (Fy./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) and
Annelise Sokolow (So./Draper, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic), the Carleton College women's volleyball team won a hard-fought, five-set match (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 21-25, 15-12) at Concordia College-Moorhead. The Knights earned their third victory in their last five matches and their first MIAC triumph of the year, thanks in large part to a season-high 12 blocks as a team.
After dropping the first set, the Knights (6-14, 1-5 MIAC) found themselves down 18-12 late in the second, potentially facing a two-set hole. However, a 5-0 run, sparked by a pair of blocks from
Catie Marvin (So./Wilmington, Del./The Tatnall School), trimmed Concordia's (6-14, 0-6 MIAC) lead to one, and the visitors were soon able to tie the set at 20-20. Despite once again falling behind, 21-23, the Knights took the last four points in the frame via a service ace and a trio of kills to tie the match at one set apiece.
The Knights' momentum carried over to the third set, as they jumped out to an 8-4 advantage, their largest lead of the evening up to that point. They would not trail the rest of the way, with the lead increasing to as many as six before Carleton saw out a 25-21 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
Concordia would flip this score in the fourth, winning, 25-21, to send the match to a deciding fifth set.
The final frame began as tightly as it possibly could, with neither team taking a lead of more than two points until a 3-0 run put Carleton up 9-6. Despite drawing to within 13-11 near the end of the match, the Cobbers were unable to cut the deficit further, and a kill each from Perret and Sokolow sealed the 15-12 victory for the Knights.
Perret racked up a total of 12 digs to go along with her 16 kills, all while hitting .312 for the night. Sokolow matched her teammate nearly stat for stat, recording 13 digs and 14 kills of her own.
Inger Shelton (Sr./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) orchestrated the Knights' offensive attack with 43 assists, and
Imani Kindness-Coleman (Sr./Lodge Grass, Mont./Hardin) and
Jancyn Appel (Jr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School) anchored Carleton on the defensive end with six blocks each.
As a team, the Knights outpaced the Cobbers in kills (58-53), assists (50-46), digs (96-90) and blocks (12-11).
Anna Brakke led the way for Concordia with 18 kills and 21 digs.
Up next for the Knights:
Carleton will continue its road trip with a 7:00 p.m. match at College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Oct. 16.
