Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Mark Paine ’22

Knights unable to secure back-to-back wins, fall to Saint Benedict

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Despite an efficient 11 kills and four blocks from Jancyn Appel (Jr./Kansas City, Mo./The Pembroke Hill School), the Carleton College volleyball team was unable to secure back-to-back road wins. After topping Concordia-Moorhead in five sets on Friday, the Knights fell in three sets to the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, 25-16, 25-19, 25-14.

After dropping the first set, the Knights (6-15, 1-6 MIAC) surged out to a quick 7-4 lead early in the second. However, a 9-1 run by the Bennies (5-11, 3-4 MIAC) put the home team up five. While Carleton fought back to tie the game at 17-17, and again at 18-18, the Knights were unable to take the lead back and lost by six points.

In what would be the deciding set, hosts raced out to an early 12-3 lead and did not look back in securing the sweep.

The Knights were not without some standout performances. Appel's 11 kills were a game high, and her .529 hitting percentage led all Carleton players. She finished with four blocks, also leading the team. Grace Perret (Fy./Green Bay, Wis./Preble) racked up 10 digs, totaling double digits in the stat for the second night in a row. Kailey Smith (Jr./Peoria, Ill./Dunlap) also had 10 digs, while Inger Shelton (Sr./San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) led the way with 23 of the team's 24 assists.

The Bennies were paced by Mary Wenisch's 18 kills and Audrey Spolidoro's 33 assists.

Carleton hit .125 compared to Saint Benedict's season-best .379 clip.
