Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matteo Pellizzer '20

Aton, Knights down the Dutch, 2-1

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Justin Crawmer (Fy./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) scored the game winning goal, and Tonny Aton (So./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) added a goal and an assist as the Carleton College men's soccer team knocked off a regionally-ranked Central College squad, 2-1. This win extended the Knights' win streak to five games in a row and preserved their perfect home record of 5-0.

It was a hard-fought victory for the Knights (7-1-0), who handed the Dutch (8-1-1) their first setback of the season. Carleton finished with the slightest of an edge statistically over Central—the No. 6 ranked team in the North Region—by outshooting the visitors 10-8, and possessing the ball for 51 percent of the match.

The scoring almost opened up in the 30th minute when a Central attacker got on the end of a dangerous ball in the box, but Carleton goalkeeper Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) came off his line and made a sprawling stop to keep the game scoreless, one of his four saves for the game.

Instead, Aton was the one to break the deadlock in the 36th minute, four minutes after he subbed on. He initially slipped and missed a Carleton cross into the box, but the ball was kicked around before Aton ultimately collected the ball and toe flicked home his shot into the bottom left corner of the goal. It was his team-best fifth goal of the season.

The home fans had barely stopped celebrating before the Knights added an insurance goal in the 41st minute. This time Brennan Johnson (Jr./Portland, Ore./Grant) sent in a looping corner kick from the left-side to the far right post, Aton skied into the air and headed the ball back across the goal front to a waiting Crawmer, who punched in the first goal of his career.

Looking to continue their unbeaten season, the Dutch put the press on Carleton, outshooting the Knights 6-2 over the final 45 minutes and dominating possession. Ian Meentemeyer scored in the 78th minute to get the visitors close, but some strong goalkeeper play from Forman insured Carleton continued its win steak.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton returns to MIAC play and takes on Concordia College at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Northfield. This is the first game of a doubleheader with the women's team scheduled to start the second game at 2:30pm. Live video and live stats for both matches will be available via athletics.carleton.edu
