NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College men's soccer team continued its perfect start to conference play with a 3-0 win over visiting Concordia College.
Trevor Jones (Fy./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) scored the game-winning goal.
While the Knights (8-1-0, 2-0 MIAC) outshot the Cobbers (4-3-1, 0-3 MIAC) by a 14-9 margin and owned a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks, only two of Carleton's shots were on target. Fortunately, both of those were converted into goals.
In the 17th minute Concordia almost opened up the scoring, but Knights goalkeeper
Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) made a leaping save to his left side to push a close-range shot over the crossbar.
Jones scored his second goal of the season in the 31st minute after
Marco da Cunha (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University) had his shot attempt blocked inside the box, and the rebound came Jones's way. He lashed home the bouncing ball with a one-timed effort into the top right corner of the net.
The Knights took advantage of the resulting shift in momentum, scoring their second goal less than one minute later. Da Cunha again created the scoring chance, this time with a powerful run down the left flank ending with a slotted pass into the center of the box, and a clinical finish by
Tonny Aton (So./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) into the open net. The score was Aton's team-best sixth of the season, tying him for the second-most in the entire MIAC.
With only seconds lefts in the first half the Cobbers had three great looks at getting a goal back, but Forman made a pointblank diving save, and Concordia saw their two subsequent rebound attempts blocked and headed into the crossbar.
Carleton finalized the scoring in the 61st minute when
Charlie Hall (So./Lagrange, Ill./Lyons Township) sent in a cross from the left wing that
Brennan Johnson (Jr./Portland, Ore./Grant) headed off a defender and into the Concordia net. It was Johnson's fifth goal of the season.
Forman finished the match with four saves, and the Knights earned their seventh shutout of the season. This is Carleton's best start to a season since starting the 2012 campaign 12-1-0.
