NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First-years Sonya Romanenko (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and Jeanny Zhang (Guangzhou, China/Dwight School) prevailed in super tiebreakers, allowing the No. 35-ranked Carleton College women’s tennis team to complete its comeback and edge No. 31 Gustavus Adolphus College by a 5-4 margin.

The Gusties (17-11, 7-1 MIAC) got off to a hot start by sweeping doubles.

Faith Yim (So./Orange, Calif./Villa Park) notched the Knights’ (14-2, 8-0 MIAC) first team point with a dominating 6-1, 6-0 triumph at sixth singles. Madeline Prins (Jr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) followed with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the fourth slot.

The Gusties got one of those points back with a win at fifth singles and held a seemingly commanding 4-2 advantage.

Kristina Conrad (Sr./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) made things more interesting with her 6-2, 6-2 win at the third slot.

Romanenko leveled the match when she dropped the first set but rallied for the 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-5) victory. This was the sixth time during her current 13-match win streak that Romanenko prevailed in a super tiebreaker.

That meant the team result would hinge on the results at second singles where Zhang battled her nationally-ranked opponent and came away with an 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-8) result. The Carleton rookie beat her second straight regionally-ranked opponent and once again did so in the super tiebreaker.

This result leaves Carleton as the lone team undefeated in MIAC play this season. The Knights have two regular-season matches remaining, beginning with a 4:30 p.m. match against College of Saint Benedict on Friday, April 26.
