Knights edge Hamline, 1-0, and move into third place

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team got back on the winning track defeating Hamline University 1-0. Joe Petrini (Fy./Brooklyn, N.Y./Packer Collegiate) came off the bench to score the late game-winner.

With the three-points Carleton (11-3-1, 4-2-1 MIAC) leapfrogged over two teams and moved from sixth place in the MIAC into a tie for third with only three conference contests left to play.

The Knights held a firm edge in the statistical battle all contest, outshooting the Pipers (3-9-1, 1-6-0 MIAC) by a 14-4 tally—with an 8-2 edge in shots on goal—while owing a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Carleton applied plenty of pressure to Hamline in the first half, with first-year Justin Crawmer (Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) leading the way with four shots on goal over the first 45 minutes of action. Malachy Zamacona came up big, though, with six first-half saves for the Pipers, sending the game into intermission scoreless.

The score was still tied 0-0 heading into the 77th minute, before Petrini scored the winner. Trevor Jones (Fy./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) alertly played a quick free kick near the top of the box out wide to Marco da Cunha (So./San Francisco, Calif./San Francisco University), who took a touch and hit a shot—the first shot on goal of the second half—that Zamacona deflected.
Fortunately for Carleton, Petrini was alertly waiting in the box and thundered home a header off the rebound for his second goal of the season. Da Cunha was credited with his seventh assist of the season.

Carleton goalkeeper Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) finished the afternoon with two saves earning the Knights their MIAC-best ninth shutout of the season.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: In a rematch of last year's MIAC Playoffs championship game, Carleton will square off against Augsburg University on Saturday, Oct. 26. This time around, the match will be held at Edor Nelson Field in Minneapolis. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m.
