Knights pick up 2-0 win at Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer team won its second MIAC road game of the week, knocking off Augsburg University, 2-0. Tonny Aton (So./Nairobi, Kenya/Lukenya) led the way for the Knights, scoring the game-winning goal and adding an assist.

With the victory, the Knights (12-3-1, 5-2-1 MIAC) maintained their third-place position in the standings and inched closer to extending their conference-record streak of 12 consecutive MIAC Playoff appearances. Meanwhile, Augsburg (7-6-3, 2-5-1 MIAC) slipped to eighth in the conference table with each team having only two matches remaining in the regular season.

Carleton was on the offensive early, racking up 10 shots in the first half compared to only three attempts for Augsburg, but neither side was able to break the deadlock.

In the 62nd minute, Aton was able to get the scoring started off an assist from Brennan Johnson (Jr./Portland, Ore./Grant). The goal was Aton's eighth of the season, moving him into the team lead. The assist was Johnson's ninth of the year, the most on the team and third-most among MIAC players this season.

The Knights added an insurance goal in the 80th minute. Trevor Jones (Fy./Urbandale, Iowa/Waukee) unleashed a long-range attempt from beyond the top of the box. Ben Turner (Fy./Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury) had to duck out of the way but appeared to partially screen Augsburg goalkeeper Garrett Kaelin, who somehow managed to stop Jones' rocket but was unable to collect the rebound.

Aton was first to the ball and slid it left to Turner, who finished into the left side of the goal for his first collegiate goal.

Carleton finished with a 20-10 edge in shots and enjoyed a 5-0 edge in corner kicks.

Aaron Forman (Jr./Los Angeles, Calif./Windward School) finished with four saves and earned the shutout in net for Carleton, the Knights' 10th of the season.

UP NEXT FOR THE KNIGHTS: Carleton will host crosstown rival St. Olaf College on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 3:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day at Bell Field, and live video/stats will be available via athletics.carleton.edu.
