St. Peter, Minn. -- The Carleton College women's tennis team won all three doubles matches, including identical 9-7 wins from the first and second slots, in avenging an earlier loss to St. Benedict by beating the Blazer, 5-3.

The win moved the Knights (14-6) in the conference tournament title match against host Gustavus. It marks the second consecutive title-match appearance for the Knights and assures them of a top-three conference finish for the fourth consecutive year.

The Knights had lost to the Blazers (17-3) back on April 12 in St. Joseph, and lost two of the three doubles matches en route to a 5-4 defeat. In the tournament semifinals, though, Carleton's top two doubles tandems reversed their previous results. In a match-up of regionally-ranked doubles teams, Carleton seniors Sarah Russell and Eryn Koch, ranked eighth, edged seventh-ranked Megan Tiegs and Katie Ward, 9-7. The Knights' number two tandem, Lisa Ottum and Shelly Getzendanner, were also 9-7 victors. The junior duo of Christina Walker and Abby Beggs completed the sweep with an easy 8-1 triumph from the third slot.

The Blazers, needing to win five of the six singles matches, tried to respond. The region's seventh-ranked player, Megan Tiegs, beat Russell at first singles, 6-0, 6-1. Beggs at second singles and Koch at third singles, though, breezed to straight sets victories for the Knights, securing the team victory and advancing the Knights to the title match.

The Blazers took wins at fourth and fifth singles and the sixth singles match with sophomore Lisa Ottum wasn't completed, as the tournament has been forced indoors by steady rain showers and thus time constraints forced the match to be played to decision only.

The Knights will face Gustavus at 1 p.m. at the Swanson Tennis Center.
