Duluth, Minnn. -- Junior Genevieve Philp overcame a first-set deficit to win at first singles and teamed with rookie Abby Beggs for victory at first doubles, but Carleton College opened the 2004 season by falling to the College of St. Scholastica, 5-4, at the Arrowhead Tennis Center.

The 2004 non-conference season opener was an excellent opportunity for head coach Sarah Hurst to play all six of her first-year players. Beggs and captain Philp's victory at first doubles, their fist competition together, was an exciting mix of solid groundstrokes and tenacious net play.r

First-year player Christina Walker arrived ready to play, posting a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win at fifth singles. Classmate Golnaz Vayghan played a crafty third set super-breaker to win at sixth singles for Carleton's third singles tally of the day.
