HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Carleton College women’s tennis team saw its seven-match win streak halted with a narrow 5-4 setback on Thursday. That contest also marked the Spring Break finale for the Knights, who went 3-1 during their time in South Carolina.
The back-and-forth match saw DePauw (6-7) win two of the three doubles contests before the Knights put together a mid-match rally that nearly resulted in another team triumph.
Madeline Prins (Jr./Pacific Palisades, Calif./Palisades Charter) tied the team competition at 2-2 with her 6-2, 6-3 win at fourth singles. Jeanny Zhang (Fy./Guangzhou, China/Dwight School)—who teamed with Faith Yim (So./Orange, Calif./Villa Park) for Carleton’s lone doubles victory—moved the Knights ahead with her 7-5, 6-1 triumph at the second slot.
Sonya Romanenko (Fy./San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) inched Carleton closer to victory with her super tiebreaker win at first singles that made the score 4-2. She recovered after dropping the first and prevailed by a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) tally.
With the back to the wall, the Tigers closed the morning with victories in the final three singles matches, winning two of the in super tiebreakers. This was Carleton’s first loss this season to a NCAA Division III opponent.

Carleton returns home and will host MIAC foe Macalester College for a 4:00 p.m. match on Friday, April 5 at the Pat Lamb Tennis Courts.
