Knights swept by Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team could not keep pace with Macalester College in a weekend doubleheader, losing game one 20-2 and the nightcap 11-1.

Game One – Macalester 20, Carleton 2
The Scots (22-10, 11-3 MIAC) took advantage of two walks and a hit-by-pitch with two outs to plate a pair in the first inning. Nathan Barnhart reached on a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the frame and scored on a deep fly from Will Schnepf that was misjudged by the Macalester right fielder. The Scots' offense stayed hot, scoring in each inning of the game with the help of 15 walks. Carleton (6-18, 4-8 MIAC) tallied another run in the seventh when Barnhart crossed home on a balk.

Game Two – Macalester 11, Carleton 1
Macalester scored in the top of the first on a sac fly, before starter Xander Stolberg put up a pair of zeroes in the second and third. Nathan Gumagay drove in a run in the fourth with a double to take the score to 2-0. The Scots tallied three more with four hits in the fifth, including a Raymond McCaskey homer.

Brandon Damelin singled to right in the fifth, Reece Wellsandt walked, and Tyler Vandersall rapped a single that scored Damelin to make the score 5-1. A three-hit sixth inning pushed two more Scot runs home, and the visitors notched three more in the eighth before closing the scoring with a ninth-inning run.

Wellsandt went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks in game two. Sam Gossard carded four hits in eight at-bats across the twin bill. Damelin was 2-for-6 with a double and a run on the day.

Stolberg threw a career-best 5.0 innings, striking out a pair and allowing four earned runs. Jackson Corcoran conceded five across 3.0 stanzas. Dan Avillo did not allow a hit in his only inning of work.
