Knights secure split with Gustavus

ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team fell 20-6 in game one to hot-hitting Gustavus Adolphus College, but excellent pitching in the latter half of the twin bill gave the Knights a 5-3 win and a split. Sam Chutkow secured the final three outs of game two to tie the highest career and single-season totals in recorded team history.

Game 1 – Gustavus 20, Carleton 6
The first four hitters for Carleton (7-19, 5-9 MIAC) reached on hard-hit baseballs. Nathan Barnhart singled, Sam Gossard doubled in Barnhart, Will Schnepf drove an RBI double to right, and Ryan Chang capped the hit parade with a single. Schnepf came in to score on a Chutkow RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead in the first.

That advantage did not last long, as Gustavus (15-15, 8-8 MIAC) tallied two runs in the first and exploded for eight in the second. The hosts poured on seven more runs on eight third-inning hits, and added two runs in the fourth.

Jackson Darke doubled to start the fifth, and later scored on a productive groundout from Schnepf, and another Carleton run scored on a fielding error. Gustavus pushed across a final run in the sixth, and a bases-loaded walk scored a run for the Knights in the seventh.

Thomas Ivey struck out three in 1.2 innings of work. Luke Reisig tamed the Gustie bats late in the game, tossing 2.0 one-hit frames and fanning one.

Barnhart went 1-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch, scoring twice. Schnepf scored twice and drove in two. Darke finished game one 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.

Game 2 – Carleton 5, Gustavus 3
The maize and blue struck first again, with Barnhart reaching on an error before Gossard slammed his 11th career home run to straightaway left, extending his hitting streak to eight games. Isaiah Hasz drew a run back for Gustavus by doubling and racing around on two wild pitches in the second. Gossard reached on an HBP and crossed the plate on a gapper double from Chang to make it 3-1 Knights in the third.

Charlie Werts threw zeroes in the third and fourth, and his offense eked out another run after Darke walked to lead off the fourth, Tyler Vandersall moved him to third with a single, and Barnhart knocked him in with an infield hit. Brayden Kohls homered to cut the Carleton advantage to 4-2, and the Gusties were able to chase Werts in the fifth. Schnepf took the hill and struck out a batter to strand the tying runner on second.

Vandersall smacked a double to left-center in the sixth inning, and Andrew Sellers guided a single to right to plate him and earn a 5-2 lead. Schnepf retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth to set up Chutkow for the ninth. Gustavus notched a run on a leadoff walk and two-out infield single, but Chutkow slammed the door for his third save on the season and fourth of his career, both of which tie Carleton records (see charts below).

Barnhart extended an on-base streak to 18 games with a pair of hits, a run, and an RBI. Gossard scored twice and drove in two with his home run. Chang went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Vandersall tallied three hits in four trips and scored. Sellers finished 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Werts threw 4.2 solid innings, allowing two runs and striking out three. Schnepf earned the win after setting down all 10 batters he faced in 3.1 electric frames, striking out six. Chutkow fanned one in his inning of work.
