Box Score CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carleton College men's tennis team lost for the first time this month, dropping a 6-1 result at Coe College in non-conference play.
"We battled as well as we could against a very formidable opponent today," said Carleton head coach
Stephan Zweifel. "But if you are willing to walk into the lion's den, you are also not afraid to get scratched."
The Kohawks (11-5) notched wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before the Knights'
Baiyun Jing and
Ezra Bernard prevailed in a tiebreaker at the third slot by a 7-6 (7-2) margin.
Zach Leslie won his No. 3 singles match in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2, to notch Carleton's (14-5) team point. Four of the other five singles matches required a tiebreaker, super tiebreaker, and/or a third set to determine a victor.
Two matches went the distance, with Coe winning both. Joshua Tiemann prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) over Jing in a thriller at No. 2 singles, and Luke Doig edged
Jack Rivkin 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (7-3 )at No. 5 singles.
Anthony Schulte edged
Akshay Garapati atop the singles lineup by a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 score, while Grant Idoux held off
Owen Heidkte by a narrow 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 margin at No. 6 singles.
Coe added a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 4 singles.
