Nina Schwab, Julia Michaski win events on Day 2 of MIAC Championships

MINNEAPOLIS – Julia Michalski (200-yard IM) and Nina Schwab (1-meter diving) earned individual titles on Day 2 of the MIAC Championships as the Carleton College women's swimming & diving team settled into fourth place in the team standings.
 
The finals began with the 500-yard freestyle. Stephanie Baranov and Chelsea Anderson both received All-MIAC Honorable Mention after the pair placed fifth and sixth, respectively, at 5:13.65 and 5:13.96. Bryan Ashland and Lucia Martin del Campo raced in the "B" final, finishing 10th (5:17.85) and 16th (5:24.60), respectively. Martin del Campo set a collegiate best with her time of 5:22.60 in the preliminary round.
 
Michalski entered the 200 IM finals as the top seed after posting a collegiate best of 2:09.99 during the morning prelims. She dropped nearly a full second off that time and pulled away for the crown after touching the wall at 2:09.00. Lilly Soillis placed 15th in the event by finishing at 2:18.93.
 
Daya Tucker and Maya Geddes raced in the "B" final of the 50-yard freestyle. The former was ninth with a collegiate-best time of 24.50, while the former covered the distance in 24.57, missing her PR by 0.01.
 
For the second time in as many years, Schwab and Hailey Westrup finished 1-2 in the 1-meter diving competition. Schwab was fifth in the prelims (396.00) but broke out her best in the finals, scoring 483.15 to break her own MIAC Championships record. Westrup owned the top score (437.35) during the preliminary round then improved on that during the finals and finished at 4:49.75.
 
The evening concluded with a runner-up result in the 400-yard medley relay. Grace Hou, Emma Yao, Michalski, and Geddes combined on a time of 3:53.57.
 
Up Next for the Knights
Day 3 of the MIAC Championships includes competition in the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, and 200-yard freestyle relay. Prelims begin at 10:30 a.m. with finals slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
