NEW ORLEANS – The Carleton College men's and women's cross country programs both received recognition along with six individuals as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its All-Academic Athletes and Teams for the 2025 cross country season.
As for team distinction, squads must have a cumulative GPA of 3.1 on a 4.0 scale. This is the 21th straight year that the Carleton women have collected All-Academic Team status and the 20th consecutive time for the men's program. Only two other MIAC schools have streaks of 10 or more years for both its men's and women's teams.
The Carleton men's program posted a cumulative GPA of 3.82, which is the Knights' highest over the last two decades and ranked second among men's teams in NCAA Division III for the 2025 season. Meanwhile, the women's program maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.66.
In order to qualify for individual All-Academic distinction, student athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.30 on a 4.0 scale and place in either the top-25 percent of their respective regional championship meet or the top 50 percent of finishers at the NCAA D-III Championships.
Individually, two members of the men's cross country team received the distinction of All-Academic:
Indy Lyness (computer science and mathematics double major) and
Gabe Nichols (political science and international relations major). Both Knights finished inside the top 50 at the North Region Championships, with Nichols taking 20th to earn earning All-Region accolades and Lyness placing 42nd of 214 finishers. Nichols was an individual qualifier for the NCAA Championships, where he placed 86th.
This was Nichols' third consecutive All-Academic Athlete award for cross country, while Lyness took home the honors for the second time (also for the fall 2022 season).
The women's cross country program saw four of its runners tabbed as All-Academic Athletes:
Amelia Campbell (undeclared),
Nicole Peterson (undeclared),
Hannah Preisser (mathematics major), and
Lauren Tittel (undeclared).
That quartet helped the Knights finish second at the NCAA North Region Championships, where Preisser was the regional champion for the second straight year. Tittel placed 18th, while Campbell was the third member of the All-Region squad after taking 35th place. Peterson crossed the line 48th of 207 finishers. All four raced at the NCAA National Championships, where Carleton finished 13th overall as a team.
This is the fourth career cross country academic award for Preisser, while rookies Campbell, Peterson, and Tittel each earned their first such honor.
