I CHOSE TO COME TO CARLETON BECAUSE…
I chose to come to Carleton because it was a great fit for me academically and athletically. I appreciated that it was a small school with great science and mathematics programs while also having welcoming, supportive, and fast cross country and track teams.
WHAT I MOST LIKE ABOUT CARLETON IS…
Its supportive academic environment
OFF-CAMPUS STUDY PROGRAM(S) PARTICIPATED IN AT CARLETON:
History, Religion, and Urban Change in Medieval and Renaissance Rome
MY OFF-CAMPUS STUDY PROGRAM ENHANCED MY EXPERIENCE AS A CARLETON STUDENT-ATHLETE BECAUSE…
I was fortunate enough to spend the 2025 spring term in Rome studying medieval and early Renaissance Italian history. I am a three-season athlete. In the break I had from track, I appreciated the opportunity to connect to the deeper roots of my love of running and to just enjoy the training. In absence of big season goals, while I was also reminded of my love of competing‚ I could not wait for my fall cross country season. Generally, I also loved living in another country for an extended period of time, experiencing their culture, and my program additionally gave me the opportunity to explore classes far outside my own major, mathematics.
INTERNSHIP/EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES DURING MY TIME AS A CARLETON STUDENT:
Over two summers and two winters in the Marchesan Lab at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I worked at a murine and clinical (wet) research lab studying periodontitis. Amongst my many projects and contributions at the lab, I led a project studying sex differences in immediate gingival inflammation following periodontal induction in female and male mice, and my work has granted me authorship on several pending papers.
Just earlier this summer as part of the Big Data Summer Institute at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, I worked with three other undergraduate students to study the genetic variation of Alzheimer's using spatial transcriptomics data, taking the lead on studying differential gene expression between healthy and diseased groups.
MY INTERNSHIP/EXTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES ENHANCED MY EXPERIENCE AS A CARLETON STUDENT-ATHLETE BECAUSE…
Gaining hands-on research experience was amazing and enhanced my experience as a Carleton student, given that I hope to be involved in academic research in my future.
HOBBIES:
Outside of running and hanging out with my friends, I enjoy reading books, drawing, and cuddling with my dogs, Scooby and Velma.
PERSON(S) WHO HAD THE MOST INFLUENCE ON MY ATHLETIC CAREER:
My family and my parents in particular, as well as my high school coach Mimi
HISTORICAL FIGURE(S) I’D MOST LIKE TO MEET:
I would love to meet historical female scientists like Marie Curie.
