Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Jackson Corcoran '26

Knights continue hot start, calm Storm 3-0

INDIANOLA, Iowa – It was the same three scorers in a different order for the Carleton College women's soccer team, as for the second straight game Claire Burbery, Kathryn Kresse, and Ashlyn Haigh found the back of the net. The seniors' contributions handed the Knights a 3-0 win over the Simpson College Storm.

Carleton (3-0-1) found itself on the road for the first time in 2025 against the Storm (2-1-1), who made the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in each of the last two seasons. Simpson and Carleton both received votes in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Top-25 national poll.

Carleton spend the majority of the game in the home team's end. The Knights outshot Simpson 16-3, with eight shots on frame to the Storm's one, and added a 9-1 edge in corners.

An early cross from first-time starter Mackenzie White located Burbery at the back post, but the winger's first-touch shot rolled just left. In the 26th minute, Zaraya Jordan stepped onto a corner clearance and flung a 30-yard shot on frame, but rookie 'keeper Amanda Pascale handled the save for the hosts.

In the 42nd minute, Burbery made up for her earlier miss. Lily Shure slipped between a set of Simpson defenders to deliver a cross to the top of the six, and Burbery was perfectly placed to redirect into the bottom corner.

Just past the hour mark  Kresse won a free kick at the top of the box, but her low driven effort fell wide. She latched onto a long ball at the 73rd-minute mark, spun past a pair of white jerseys, and thumped her 28th career goal into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. The California native has now scored or assisted in each of Carleton's first four matches. In 13 non-conference regular season games over the last two years, Kresse has totaled 11 goals and 5 assists.

Carleton put the game to bed with six minutes left on the clock. Burbery swung a corner kick to Haigh, who connected on a powerful header to put Carleton up by three.

Avery Trapp was not very busy in picking up her first solo clean sheet of the season, making just one save. This shutout was the 18th of her career, placing her in a tie for third-most all time among Carleton goalkeepers after just four games of her junior season (see chart below).

Burbery's goal and assist marked the first time in her career that she posted multiple goal contributions.
