Loras downs No. 16 Knights with close-range goals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Two scrappy goals for regionally-ranked Loras College downed the No. 16-ranked Carleton College women's soccer team 2-0 at home on Saturday.

The Knights (3-1-1) lost for the first time in 2025 and have not lost a regular-season game to a team other than Loras (3-0-1) in the last two years. The Duhawks began the year at No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) preseason national top-25 poll and are now placed fourth in the Region IX rankings from USC. The Knights were listed at No. 16 in the most recent national roll.

Carleton out-shot the Duhawks 12-7, but Loras had the edge in shots on goal 4-2. The two sides both took seven corners.

Claire Burbery took the first shot on goal of the game, crashing in from the left flank. Her short-sided strike was saved by sophomore netminder Hannah Fedinec. Burbery would take a game-high four shots and had both Carleton on-frame attempts. She also tested Fedinec in the 34th minute but was denied.

In the 44th minute, Gracie Gasmann took a free kick from 40 yards out. The graduate student leathered a high shot on goal, which ticked off the goalkeeper's hands and off the crossbar. The ball bounced back into the fray, and Emily Bowe hip-checked it over the line for a Loras lead.

Carleton outshot Loras 10-3 in the second half, but most of their attempts were from long range. Loras provided the dagger in the 78th minute when Gasmann punched another corner towards the penalty spot. The ball was deflected to the top of the six-yard box, where the rookie Bowe again pounced. Bowe looped a shot off the underside of the crossbar that landed inches past the line, and the Duhawks would hold the score there to remain undefeated.

Avery Trapp made two saves on the afternoon, as did her counterpart Fedinec.
