NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Goals by seniors
Kathryn Kresse,
Ashlyn Haigh, and
Claire Burbery gave the Carleton College women's soccer team a 3-0 victory over visiting Hope College.
The initial stages of the contest featured both squads racing up and down the field, but without any truly dangerous scoring chances.
The Knights (2-0-1) eventually broke through in the 29th minute.
Lola Feurer sent a cross into the box where it was headed down by a Flying Dutch (2-1-0) defender. Kresse ran onto the loose ball and blasted a 15-yard shot past the sprawling goalkeeper and into the left side of the net. It was her second goal of the season and the 27th of her career.
Less than four minutes later, Carleton doubled its advantage. Feurer's header off a corner kick was blocked by a Hope defender, but Haigh was there to volley the rebound into the right side of the net for her first tally of the campaign and the 13th of her career.
Not even three minutes into the second half, the Knights looked to put the game out of reach. Kresse took the ball toward the endline and served a cross near the PK spot. The ball sailed over the Hope defense and right to Burbery, who smashed it out of the air and through the keeper's hands for her fifth career goal.
Isabella Gill nearly got on the scoresheet in the 77th minute when her 36-yard free kick forced Hope goalie Clara Feenstra to leap to punch the ball over the bar.
The Flying Dutch appeared to break through in the 87th minute, but Stella DeSmit's shot was cleared off the line by Carleton centerback
Zaraya Jordan, keeping the home team's clean sheet intact.
The Knights finished with a 14-10 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Both sides attempted five corner kicks. Carleton's
Avery Trapp (three saves) and
Sophia Lehman (one save) combined on the Knights' first shutout of the season.
Kresse is now second in career assists (18) and points (72) at Carleton and alone in third place with the 27 career goals (see charts below).
