NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The annual clash between the Carleton College women's soccer team and its crosstown rival St. Olaf College ended in a 1-1 draw.
The game, played with temperatures in the lower 90s, served as the MIAC opener for both regionally-ranked programs and marked the third consecutive season that the Northfield Derby resulted in a tie. In 2023 the rivals battled to a scoreless draw, while last year's game resulted in a 2-2 tally.
The Knights (3-1-1, 0-0-1 MIAC) opened the scoring early. In the sixth minute,
Sam Gotch sent a corner kick to the far post, and
Ashlyn Haigh out-jumped her mark and headed home her third goal of the season and the 15th of her career.
St. Olaf (5-1-1, 0-0-1 MIAC) found the equalizer in the 59th minute when Emily Johnson re-directed a cross from the left wing and tucked the shot inside the near post.
With the Oles now holding the momentum, Carleton goalie
Avery Trapp made a pair of diving stops in the 62nd minute to keep the contest deadlock. First, she rejected a low attempt by Johnson before recovering to make a sprawling save of an Avery Sames' shot destined for the upper left corner. Trapp's latter effort left the Ole players holding their heads in disbelief.
Trapp concluded the contest with a season-high seven saves, the highest regular-season total in her collegiate career.
