MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team was swept on the road by Augsburg University, falling 9-4 and 12-2 (7 inn.)
Game 1– Augsburg 9, Carleton 4
The Auggies (12-19, 6-8 MIAC) took advantage of three free passes in the bottom of the first inning to post four runs. Carleton (8-16, 2-12 MIAC) got one back when
Jack Hommeyer punched a single up the middle to score
Ryan Chang in the second.
The Knights made it a 4-3 game in the third frame as
Sam Zacks was hit by a pitch and scored on a
Sam Gossard double.
Aaron Rice tripled to deep right and touched the plate when
Will Schnepf dropped a single down the right field line.
The Auggies cranked out five runs in the bottom of the inning, however, and an RBI double from Rice in the top of the fifth was all the scoring Carleton would find for the remainder of the contest.
Rice went 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits, a run, and an RBI. Zacks scored two of Carleton's four runs.
Mark Fernandez allowed four hits and a walk over 2.1 innings but was able to keep Augsburg scoreless out of the bullpen.
Jake Stern threw a perfect sixth, extending a three-week, four-outing scoreless streak.
Game 2 – Augsburg 12, Carleton 2 (7 inn.)
The Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Zacks knocked a leadoff single and back-to-back free passes loaded the bases in the first. Schnepf singled home Zacks before a double play grounder allowed another runner to cross.
Augsburg got one of the those runs back in the bottom of the inning before plating five runs in the third with the help of a throwing error and a two-out, bases-clearing double. The hosts scored in each of the next four frames to close out the sweep, as the Knights offense quieted after its strong start.
Zacks finished 2-for-4 with a run. Starter
Sam Chutkow took the loss, fanning four over 3.0 innings.
Dan Avillo and
Jordan Kramer struck out two batters each in their relief appearances.
