NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The bats for the Carleton College softball team were held in check as the Knights lost both ends of a doubleheader at crosstown rival St. Olaf College, falling by scores of 4-0 and 2-0.
The Knights (10-24, 4-12 MIAC), who scored 22 runs over a pair of 5-inning victories on Saturday, were unable to get on track against a trio of St. Olaf (19-13, 10-6 MIAC) hurlers. The head-to-head series dates back to 1974, and this marked the first time that either side was able to toss shutouts in both games of a twin bill.
Game 1 — St. Olaf 4, Carleton 0
St. Olaf scored all four of its runs with two out, pushing across single tallies in the second and fifth inning before plating two insurance runs in the sixth inning.
The Knights were limited to only two hits — singles by
Esme Song in the fourth inning and
Megan Smith in the sixth inning.
The Oles' Roxanne Ring (9-3) tossed the two-hitter to secure her second consecutive complete-game shutout.
Rachel Block (6-8) absorbed the loss, allowing the four runs on eight hits.
Game 2 — St. Olaf 2, Carleton 0
All of the scoring came in the fourth inning when a two-out single was followed by a home run by Eva Hokanson.
The Knights saw doubles by
Natasha Paez and
Bryanna Schaffer and a single from
Grace Colburn but were unable to push a run across.
Starting pitcher Madyn Singleton (3-3) worked the first 4.0 innings for the hosts, the two doubles and a walk. Jaelyn Orth pitched the final 3.0 innings of one-run ball for her first save.
Sydney Trentman (3-9) fanned four over her 6.0 innings of work, allowing six hits and a walk.
