Knights come up short in two nail-biters against Hamline

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team dropped two close games to visiting Hamline University, falling 4-1 (8 inn.) and 4-3. Bryanna Schaffer paced the Knights with four hits on the day.

Game 1 — Hamline 4, Carleton 1 (8 inn.)
The opener was a pitchers' duel as Carleton's (10-26, 4-14 MIAC) Rachel Block and Hamline's (15-21, 5-13 MIAC) Allison Boynton took turns keeping the opposing offense at bay.

The Pipers finally broke the deadlock in the top of the sixth inning as Jenna Rubbelke doubled and scored on Savannah Johnson's triple. The Knights avoided further damage by turning an inning-ending double play.

Carleton got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Walks drawn by Esme Song and Adrianna Wiggins preceded a single from Livi Peters that loaded the bases. Block then helped her own cause with a game-tying sacrifice fly.

The Knights threatened again in the bottom of the seventh but stranded a pair of baserunners, and the Pipers took advantage in extra innings.

Boynton doubled home the first run, and Hamline added additional tallies via a two-out bases-loaded walk followed by a hit batter to force another run home.

Both squads managed only five hits in the contest. Block (6-9) and Boynton (5-8) both went the distance.

Game 2 — Hamline 4, Carleton 3
Carleton plated a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the first thanks to back-to-back two-out doubles by Schaffer and Wiggins and an RBI single by Peters.

A pair of two-baggers resulted in the Pipers plating a run in the top of the second inning, and the score remained 2-1 until the visitors pushed across a two-out run in the fifth.

Hamline plated another two-out run in the sixth, but Carleton leveled the score in the bottom of the inning as an error, single by Wiggins, and walk by Peters loaded the bases. Grace Colburn followed with an RBI single that made the score 3-3.

Hamline scored in the top of the seventh and had runners at second and third with only one out before Becca Madsen came out of the bullpen to strike out the next two batters.

Carleton got the tying and winning runs aboard in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pipers were able to induce a game-ending groundout.

Both starting shortstops — Hamline's Rubbelke and Carleton's Schaffer — went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Sydney Trentman (3-10) absorbed the loss, while Natalee Boelk (4-6) picked up the win in relief for Hamline.
