Bryanna Schaffer sets three school records as Knights sweep Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team swept a doubleheader at Augsburg University, securing run-rule victories of 12-5 (5 inn.) and 10-0 (5 inn.) With her performance in game one, Bryanna Schaffer set not one, not two, but three team records. She now sits alone atop the program leaderboard for career hits, career RBI, and career doubles (see charts below).

Carleton (10-22, 4-10 MIAC) posted its top two scoring outputs of the season.

"It was great to finally get our bats going today," said Carleton head coach Amy Erickson. "To get our production top to bottom made this great team effort. We put all the pieces together - good pitching, solid defense, unrelenting offense, and a great positive energy!"

Game 1 — Carleton 12, Augsburg 4 (5 inn.)
Schaffer began the day tied for most doubles in program history and one back from the Carleton's all-time leaders in career hits and RBI.

She stepped into the batter's box with two aboard in the top of the first inning. With one swing of the bat, she set or tied a trio of school records when her drive to right-center field one hopped the wall.
• It was her 174th career hit, tying Jenny Ramey '14 atop the leaderboard
• It was her 38th career double, breaking a tie with Natalie Maurice '20 and Madison Collins '22 for first place
• The two-bagger also drove home Megan Smith and Esme Song, giving Schaffer 99 career RBIs, moving her past Maurice and Katie Eppard '18 and into the top spot in team annals

"Bryanna has truly put herself amongst the very best in Carleton history," said Erickson. "She has been an impact player and person since she first arrived on campus. She has truly earned her place in the record books."

With Carleton already leading 3-0, Schaffer drew a walk to begin the third inning, sparking what would ultimately be a Knights' two-run rally.

After the Auggies (13-19, 4-10 MIAC) got two runs back in the bottom of the third, Schaffer's two-out single up the middle was the 175th of her career, setting her third team record of the day. It also set the stage for Adriana Wiggins' RBI single, which was followed by Livi Peters' three-run homer to center field that extended the Carleton advantage to 9-2.

Augsburg scored twice in the bottom of the frame, but the Knights responded with three more runs in the fifth as Smith and Song had RBI singles. Carleton was able to keep the Auggies off the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning, securing the eight-run rule to take effect.

Schaffer was 2-for-2 with a double, two walks, three runs scored, and two RBI.

Rachel Block went the distance on the rubber, improving to 6-7 on the season after yielding four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.

Game 2 — Carleton 10, Augsburg 0 (5 inn.)
Carleton rode a strong start from the offense and a two-hit shutout by Sydney Trentman to the Knights' first conference sweep of the season.

The Knights scored four times in the top of the first and Wiggins and Paige Arnold both drove home two runs, the former with a double to left center, and the latter with a single up the middle.

Smith doubled home a run in the second, and Carleton scored its final five runs in the third. Natasha Paez contributed a two-run triple before Smith added a run-scoring groundball. An Augsburg error permitted the ninth run of the game, and Schaffer smacked another RBI double to cap the scoring.

Smith led the squad with two hits and was 1 of 4 Knights with two RBIs in the contest.

Trentman collected five strikeouts and issued one walk in posting her third victory of the campaign.
