Game Recap: Softball |

Knights lose two nail-biters at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. – The Carleton College softball team opened its Southern California trip by dropping a pair of low-scoring affairs against Chapman University, falling 2-0 and 3-2.

In what may have been a bad omen for the offenses, overnight, the sprinklers at El Camino Real Park destroyed the field that was originally scheduled to be used, so the start time was pushed back while an alternate site was found.

Game 1 – Chapman 2, Carleton 0
The Knights (2-4) out-hit the Panthers (13-2) by a 5-4 margin, but Chapman scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first — despite not getting the ball out of the infield — and made it hold up.

Carleton had runners in scoring position in the third, fourth, and fifth innings, but the Knights could not push a run across against Rose Malen, who tossed a five-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

Rachel Block took the loss, despite permitting only four hits and walk over 6.0 innings of work.

Megan Smith, Bryanna Schaffer, Adriana Wiggins, Block, and Livi Peters had the hits for Carleton.

Game 2 – Chapman 3, Carleton 2
The Knights appeared poised to salvage a split before Chapman rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when Samantha Rodriguez walked, advanced via a sac bunt, and raced home on Schaffer's single to left field.

Carleton doubled its lead in the sixth. Grace Colburn singled, and pinch runner Becca Madsen eventually scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Natasha Paez.

The Knights carried a 2-0 lead into the final frame, but Chapman opened the bottom of the seventh with consecutive singles to chase Sydney Trentman, who had entered the inning having allowed only two hits with five strikeouts over 6.0 innings.

Block took over in the circle, and a sac bunt moved both runners up 60 feet. Miranda Murphy then plated the first Chapman run with a single to left field. After Block struck out a pinch hitter, Ilianna Serna steered a two-out, opposite field single to bring home the tying and winning runs for the Panthers.

Schaffer had a game-high two hits, and Rodriguez reached base all three times.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton returns to action on Sunday, March 23 with a twinbill at Pomona Pitzer. First pitch is slated for 12:00 p.m. PDT.
