Knights split twin bill at Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Carleton College softball team split a Sunday afternoon doubleheader at Pomona-Pitzer, rallying to take the opener 8-5 before dropping the second game 9-1 (5 inn.) Bryanna Schaffer's fourth career home run capped game one, and Megan Smith paced the Knights with three hits on the day.

Game 1 – Carleton 8, Pomona-Pitzer 5
Pomona-Pitzer (13-5) raced out to a 5-1 lead after three innings, but the Knights (3-5) score seven unanswered runs and picked up their first victory of their Southern California trip.

After the Sagehens jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Brooke Bullis home run, Esme Song got Carleton on the board with a two-out RBI single that plated Smith in the top of the third inning. The hosts responded immediately with two more tallies in the bottom of the frame.

Trailing 5-1, the Knights took advantage of three Sagehen miscues in the fifth inning to push across six runs. Smith, Adriana Wiggins, and Rachel Block had run-scoring hits in the frame.

Schaffer's two-out solo home run in the sixth concluded the scoring for Carleton.

Block (2-2) picked up the win, going the distance and scattering eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

Game 2 — Pomona-Pitzer 9, Carleton 1 (5 inn.)
Carleton grabbed the early lead as Smith led off the contest with a single, and Schaffer followed one out later with an RBI double to right field.

Pomona-Pitzer plated a pair of runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth against Sydney Trentman (0-2), who took the loss after permitting four runs over 4.0 frames.

The hosts closed out the contest by scoring five times in the fifth inning against the Carleton bullpen despite managing only one hit in the frame thanks to four walks, a hit batter, and an error.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton visits Whittier College for a twin bill beginning at 12:30 p.m. PDT/2:30 p.m. CDT on Monday, March 24.
