GRANVILLE, Ohio – Carleton College first-year
Nina Schwab tallied 446.30 points and finished second in the 1-meter competition at the NCAA Diving Regionals. Sophomore
Hailey Westrup placed ninth after totaling 407.75 points, a 12-point improvement from her regionals score as a rookie.
While official selections for the upcoming NCAA Division III championships will not be announced until next week, Schwab's placement in the standings makes it extremely likely that she will be awarded 1 of the 8 diving slots allotted to Region 1.
Schwab started the day with her two lowest-scoring dives and sat in 13th place. She posted her highest score—up to that point—in the third round, collecting 42.90 points on a Forward 1 1/2 Somersault 1 Twist Free (5132D) to jump into sixth place.
Schwab moved into fifth after five rounds but slipped to eighth after the next round. She posted her second-highest score of the day in the seventh round, earning 50.70 points on a 2.6 degree of difficulty dive, the Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike (105B) to move back to fifth in the standings.
The eighth round saw her slide into fourth place, and Schwab tallied her highest score of the session by garnering 55.20 points in the ninth round via an Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike (403B). That vaulted her into second place, a spot Schwab would maintain over the final two rounds.
Westrup got off to a great start and was in second place after three dives. She still held fourth place after posting her top score of the day, 43.20 points on a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Tuck (105C), during the seventh round.
After sliding to ninth place in the ninth round, the next round saw Westrup post her third 40+ point dive of the day, adding 40.80 points to her total via the Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike (403B).
Both Schwab and Westrup will compete in the 3-meter competition on Saturday.
