SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Despite a fast start and another strong performance from senior Sylvia Dixon, the Carleton College volleyball team fell in four sets to St. Catherine (20-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-14) in MIAC play Saturday evening at the Butler Center.
Carleton came out sharp in the opening set, using a balanced attack to claim a 25–20 victory. Trailing 13-12, the Knights rattled off six straight points to take an 18-13 lead and never looked back. First-year Ella Goolsby had a pair of kills in the run and Dixon collected three kills down the stretch. The team hit .270 in the frame and closed the set on a kill from Jennifer Bricker.
St. Catherine regrouped in the second set, edging the Knights 25–22. Carleton rallied from a late 23–14 deficit with an 8-1 run thanks to multiple points from Goolsby and Dixon to pull within two (24-22), but the Wildcats managed to close the set with a kill from Liz Rosen to even the match.
In the third set, St. Catherine took advantage of key service runs and a .273 team hitting percentage to pull ahead 2–1 in the match. Carleton continued to battle, with Dixon recording several timely kills and junior setter Megan Smith keeping the offense moving, but the Wildcats held on for a 25–19 win.
Carleton looked for a response in the fourth but could not slow down St. Catherine's attack, which produced 12 kills on .385 hitting to clinch the match with a 25–14 win in the frame.
Dixon led all players with 18 kills and notched her second consecutive double-double, adding 11 digs. Goolsby tallied 12 kills, and Smith paced the attack with a double-double of her own, tallying 40 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Madeleine Dimitre anchored the back row with a match-high 21 digs, while senior Ella Curtis-Revelle chipped in 12 and first-year Angelina Erhardt posted 11.
