NORTHFIELD, Minn. –
Claire Burbery turned in her second multi-goal effort of the season as the No. 23-ranked Carleton College women's soccer team celebrated Homecoming with a 3-0 victory over Saint Mary's University. The Knights extended their win streak to eight games and clinched a spot in next month's MIAC Playoffs.
Carleton (11-1-2, 7-0-1 MIAC) notched its sixth consecutive shutout and extended its scoreless streak to 552 minutes. The Knight defense limited a regionally-ranked Saint Mary's (8-5-2, 2-4-2 MIAC) squad to only three shots overall and no shots on goal.
Carleton was on the attack immediately and attempted the first seven shots of the game, finishing the day with 17 total attempts. In addition to being nationally ranked by the United Soccer Coaches, the Knights are listed at No. 8 in the latest NCAA Power Index (NPI).
The day's first goal came in the 18th minute.
Lauren Caldwell had the ball on the right side of the box, spun around a defender, and slotted a pass toward the top of the box. Burbery held off a defender and fired a shot over Cardinal goalkeeper Anna Peckosh.
Carleton doubled the lead in the 38th minute.
Lola Feurer volleyed home a bouncing ball from just beyond the top of the 18-yard box. It was her fourth goal of the year.
The day's scoring concluded early in the second half as Burbery found her way onto the scoresheet again int eh 49th minute.
Dylan Baker carried the ball toward the endline and sent a pass to the top of the six-yard box. Burbery got inside the shoulder of the defender and re-directed the ball home for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Isabelle Connolly nearly tacked on an insurance goal, but her shot clanged off the crossbar in the 83rd minute.
