MINNEAPOLIS – On the strength of a second-half goal by
Kathryn Kresse and the seventh consecutive shutout by the defense, the No. 23-ranked Carleton College women's soccer team secured a 1-0 victory at Augsburg University.
With the victory, the Knights (12-1-2, 8-0-1 MIAC) stretched their win streak to nine games and remain in a tie atop the MIAC standings. With yet another clean sheet, the Carleton defense extended its team-record shutout streak to more than 642 minutes (see chart below).
Augsburg (8-7-0, 5-4-0 MIAC) did its best to hold the Carleton offense in check, but the Knights finished the contest with a 13-4 edge in shot attempts and a 7-0 advantage in shots on goal. Carleton also held a 61-39 advantage in possession time.
The Knights finally broke through with the game's lone tally in the 76th minute. Kresse spun and unleased a rising 26-yard rocket into the upper right corner of the goal. It was her seventh score of the season and 32nd of her career.
Lily Shure was credited with an assist on the goal.
Carleton has now outscored its conference foes by a 24-1 margin, tops in the MIAC.
Meanwhile, the Carleton defense limited the Auggies to only four long-range attempts, none of which truly tested Knights' goalkeeper
Avery Trapp. This includes only one try for Jayla Ponce, Augsburg's leading scorer this season and a top-three scorer among MIAC players this fall.
