ST. PETER, Minn. – The Carleton College women's soccer team scored a trio of set piece goals in securing a 3-0 victory at Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Knights (9-1-2, 5-0-1 MIAC) entered the day ranked No. 24 by the United Soccer Coaches but more importantly sat at No. 9 in the NCAA Power Index (NPI) used for NCAA tournament selections. They remain in a tie atop the conference standings with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Carleton controlled the run of play as the Knights owned a 2-to-1 advantage in possession time and were credited with all 22 shots in the contest, including 12 on goal as they extended their win streak to six matches. Carleton has out-scored the opposition 19-2 during this stretch, including four consecutive shutouts
Lola Feurer opened the scoring with an 18th-minute header off a corner kick delivery by
Claire Burbery into the six-yard box. It was Feurer's third career goal, all of them coming this fall.
Five minutes later, Carleton scored again after earning a corner kick. Burbery sent the ball toward the far post, and
Lily Shure one-touch volleyed the ball home for her second goal of the season and her career. With two helpers on the day, Burbery moved into a tie for ninth on Carleton's career assist leaderboard (see chart below).
Kathryn Kresse nearly tacked on another goal when she struck the crossbar with her attempt in the 81st minute.
The Knights concluded the scoring with another set piece goal in the 88th minute. This time
Sam Gotch delivered the corner kick, sending the ball to the top of the six-yard box.
Ashlyn Haigh headed the ball home for her fifth goal of the season and the 17th of her career.
Avery Trapp was credited with her 21st career clean sheet and lowered her goals against average to .596.
