Claire Burbery's hat trick sparks Knights to 5-0 win over Concordia

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Behind a first-half hat trick by Claire Burbery and the first career score for Rian Fitzpatrick, the Carleton College women's soccer team cruised to a 5-0 victory over visiting Concordia College-Moorhead on Wednesday afternoon.

Burbery's three-goal performance equaled her season total entering the match. It is the 15th hat trick by the Knights (7-1-2, 3-0-1 MIAC) since 1988 and the first in a conference game since Marlena Hartman-Filson vs. Hamline on Sept. 25, 2010 (see chart below for full hat trick list).

The game's opening goal came in the 32nd minute. Ashlyn Haigh played a longball behind the Cobbers (0-6-3, 0-4-0 MIAC) backline. Burbery ran on to it, worked free of a defender, and dribbled toward the edge of the six-yard box before smashing a low-angle shot over the goalie's right shoulder and into the net.

About a minute later, the Knights struck again. Isabelle Connolly sent a left-footed cross toward the PK spot, Kathryn Kresse touched the ball over to Burbery, who shot under the on-rushing keeper.

Burbery completed her goal barrage in the 42nd minute. Eliza Barton, making her debut after a preseason injury, carried the ball toward the corner before sending a cross to the top of the six-yard box. Burbery stepped in front of her mark and nodded home her 10th career goal.

Carleton was not done finding the back of the net. In the 55th minute, Haigh tallied her fifth goal of the campaign and the 17th of her career, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard box inside the right post.

Fitzpatrick capped the scoring in the 61st minute, heading home a corner kick by Isabella Gill. The five goals matched the Knights' season high.

Carleton finished with a 26-6 edge in shots and a 15-3 margin in shots on goal in addition to all 11 corner kicks in the contest.

Avery Trapp was credited with one save, and backup goalkeeper Sophia Lehman collected two more as the Knights posted their second consecutive shutout and their fifth of the season. The result earned Trapp the 31st victory in goal of her Carleton career, tying Yusi He' 09 for most goalie wins in recorded team history (see chart below).

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads to St. Catherine University for a 1:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 4. Those two programs shared the MIAC regular-season crown in 2024.
