Marcel Diggs hired as Associate Athletic Director

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Marcel Diggs will join the Physical Education, Athletics, and Recreation (PEAR) Department at Carleton College as Associate Athletic Director. He will begin work at Carleton on June 28, 2024.

"We are very excited to have Marcel join our Carleton family!" said Heidi Jaynes, who is being promoted to the role of Athletic Director at the College. "Marcel brings a strong foundation of success from his previous experiences, and he understands our student-athletes' commitment to excelling academically and athletically. He is an enthusiastic leader, and we are eager to have him back in Northfield."

Diggs' appointment completes the re-organization of Carleton's PEAR Department in advance of current Athletic Director Gerald Young's retirement at the end of the month. Jaynes previously served as Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator. In addition to being promoted to Athletic Director, she also takes over as chair of the PEAR Department. Amy Erickson, head softball coach at Carleton, adds Senior Women Administrator responsibilities to her duties, while Tammy Metcalf-Filzen, head coach of the women's basketball program, will serve as PE Curriculum Coordinator in addition to her coaching responsibilities.

Diggs' responsibilities at Carleton will include assisting with compliance and eligibility tracking for Carleton student-athletes and adherence to MIAC and NCAA rules; budgetary planning, review, and fundraising; departmental policy development; personnel hiring and coach evaluations; and oversight of the NCAA Health Care Administrator, athletic event management, and the sports information office.

Diggs spent the last 18 months serving as the Assistant Athletic Director of Events and Operations for the Pomona-Pitzer Department of Athletics in Claremont, Calif. While working for the Sagehens, Diggs oversaw the scheduling of all athletic and recreation facilities, staffing and operations of events, home game management; and championship hosting. He also provided leadership in planning and designing events, facility maintenance, and upgrades.

Diggs returns to Northfield, where he was a 2020 graduate of nearby St. Olaf College, majoring in economics with an emphasis in management. A member of the Oles' football and track & field programs, he was elected football team captain for his sophomore season and held that leadership role for three years. Diggs also served one year as president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at St. Olaf. During his time as an undergraduate, he participated in the NCAA's Division III Student Immersion Program in January 2019 as well as both the NCAA Next Steps Program and Career in Sports Forum in June 2019. During the summer of 2019 he was an administrative intern for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).

After graduation, Diggs spent a year as an intern at the NCAA national office, working in Administrative Services as assisting in the areas of operations, business performance management, human resources, information services, internal auditing, and finance.

He then took part in a two-year program at Tufts University as a Future Leader Graduate Fellow and earned a master's degree in Diversity and Inclusion Leadership within the Tufts Graduate School of Arts & Sciences. Diggs also worked within various units of the Jumbos' athletics department: facilities, events, and game operations; fundraising, development, and alumni engagement; business operations and compliance; marketing, communications, and social media; and student affairs, student recreation, and club sports.

"It is a surreal feeling to be back in Northfield and have the opportunity to serve the PEAR Department and Carleton community at large," said Diggs. "I'm looking forward to fostering new relationships and being a part of the Knight community."
