ST. PAUL, Minn. –
Rachel Block tossed a shutout in game two as the Carleton College softball team split two games at Hamline University. The Pipers prevailed in the opener 5-2 before the Knights took game two, 6-0.
Game 1 Recap
The Knights (13-19, 4-14 MIAC) were unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities in the first contest, picking up 11 hits but scoring only two runs after stranding nine baserunners, including the bases loaded in the second, fifth, and sixth frames.
The Pipers (15p-17, 5-13 MIAC) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after two innings. Carleton put its first run on the board in the fifth inning as
Natasha Paez led the inning off with a double to center and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Esme Song followed with a RBI single.
In the sixth, the Knights tallied their other run,
Grace Colburn hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a two-out hit by
Helen Moses. The Pipers added an insurance run in the home half of the sixth, and a late comeback effort from the Knights fell short.
Sydney Trentman absorbed the loss for the Knights, pitching all 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits and a walk. She struck out four batters during her outing. Gracie Bond earned the win for the Pipers in her 5.2-inning outing, allowing two earned runs on nine hits and two walks.
Game 2 Recap
Sharp pitching for both sides kept the game scoreless until the top of the sixth. The Knights broke the deadlock by tallying five runs. Moses singled and
Bryanna Schaffer walked with one out. Colburn,
Reagan Wills, and
Paige Arnold followed with consecutive RBI singles. After a groundout, Song added a two-run single.
Colbrunn singled home
Megan Smith for an insurance run in the seventh.
Block allowed only four singles and no walks in notching her second shutout of the season.
