Runs hard to come by as Knights get swept at Gustavus Adolphus

ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Carleton College softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Gustavus Adolphus College, absorbing 3-1 and 3-0 defeats.

Game 1 Recap
The teams traded runs in the first inning, but unfortunately for the Knights (13-21, 4-16 MIAC), it proved to be their only run of the contest. Meagan Smith worked a leadoff walk, advanced to second base on a passed ball, and stole third base. Bryanna Schaffer picked up the RBI with a sacrifice fly to right field.

Carleton left runners in scoring position in each of the first three frames, then did not get a runner to second base the rest of the way.

Gustavus (22-18, 16-6 MIAC) added two-out runs in the fourth and sixth innings.

Rachel Block pitched a complete game for the Knights in the loss and was charged with three earned runs on six hits with zero walks.

Maizie Anderson of the Gusties pitched a complete game of her own and earned the win, allowing the unearned run on three hits and five walks.

Game 2 Recap
Similar to the opener, the Knights had scoring chances early, but they were unable to capitalize and left two runners aboard in each of the first three innings.

The Gusties on the other hand, took advantage of an error to score twice in the home half of the first inning. The hosts added another run in the fourth.

Sydney Trentman was charged with the loss in her complete 6.0-inning outing, yielding three runs (only one earned) on seven hits and three walks.

Ava Hamsund pitched the shutout for the Gusties, striking out five Knights' batters while allowing five hits and a walk.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton closes out the season with a pair of contests at Concordia College-Moorhead on Monday, May 6. First pitch in game one is set for 3:30 p.m.
