Big rallies during game two give Knights a split with Augsburg

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sam Gossard had five hits on the day and Steve Antrim added four of his own, including a home run in game two, as the Carleton College baseball team spit a doubleheader with visiting Augsburg University. The Knights dropped the opener 6-4 but bounced back to take the second game by a 14-9 margin.

Game 1
Carleton (9-18, 6-8 MIAC) jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the bottom of the first but missing a chance to widen the gap by leaving the bases loaded.

Augsburg (7-19, 4-10 MIAC) was gifted two runs in the top of the third thanks to a two-out error, but the Knights regained the lead in the fifth. Ananth Iyer was hit by a pitch and moved to third on Antrim's double down the left-field line. One out later, John Hurtubise was hit by a pitch and Jack Hommeyer coaxed a bases-loaded walk to force home a run.

A Carleton throwing error permitted two runs to score in the top of the sixth, giving Augsburg a 4-3 lead that lasted only two batters. Sam Zacks was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the frame, and Gossard drove a RBI triple off the right field wall, knotting the game.

Lance Nayman led off the top of the seventh with a solo home run, and an error led to another unearned run that gave Augsburg a 6-4 advantage and ultimate victory.

Gossard and Antrim both went 2-for-4 in the game.

Will Schnepf made the start for Carleton and collected seven strikeouts over 6.0 innings. He ended up with a no decision after yielding four runs (none earned) on four hits and three walks. Andrew Sellers took the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) over his inning of relief. Sean Littmann picked up his second relief win of the season.

Game 2
Once again, Carleton jumped all over the starting pitcher as the Knights batted around in the bottom of the first scoring four times, three of them on Sam Chutkow's bases-loaded triple.

Drew Jenkins' responded with a two-run home run in the top of the second, cutting the deficit in half. A two-out error in the third inning opened the door for a three-run rally, giving Augsburg a 5-4 lead.

The visitors plated two more unearned runs in the top of the fifth, giving Augsburg a three-run margin.

The game seemingly changed on a dropped third strike to begin the bottom of the frame. Schepf swung and missed, but the ball eluded the Auggie catcher and the throw to first base was late. Iyer followed with a RBI double to left field, and Antrim crushed a no-doubt, game-tying home to left field, leveling the score at 7-7. It was Antrim's third home run over his last seven games.

Nathan Barnhart's RBI single later in the inning gave Carleton its second four-run inning of the game.

The score remained 8-7 until the Knights erupted for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hommeyer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home the first run. Zacks was walked to bring home another tally, and Gossard followed with a three-run double. Schnepf tacked on a RBI single to cap the rally.

Augsburg scored twice in the ninth, but it was not nearly enough as Carleton closed out the 14-9 victory.

Ryan Chang made the surprise start, allowing five runs (only two earned) over 3.0 innings. Zach Gordon (1-0) recorded his first collegiate victory, tossing 2.0 frames and allowing a pair of unearned runs. Jack Curtis followed with 2.0 scoreless innings, and Jake Stern worked the final 2.0 innings and picked up the save.

Gossard went 3-for-5 with four RBIs while Antrim went 2-for-4 with a double and home run. Iyer added two hits and three runs scored.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads to St. Paul, Minn. to face Hamline University in a doubleheader at CHS Field on Monday, April 22.
