Sam Chutkow's gem helps Knights to split at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team capped a stretch of 10 games in 10 days by splitting a doubleheader against Hamline University. Behind a complete game effort from Sam Chutkow, the Knights won game one, 4-1, before the Pipers claimed game two by a 16-6 (8 inn.) tally.

Game 1
Aaron Rice opened the scoring for the Knights (10-19, 7-9 MIAC) in the second by stinging a line drive into right center field and motoring into third for an RBI triple. Ananth Iyer added an RBI single of his own in the fourth.

All the while, Chutkow was masterful on the mound, posting three zeroes in the opening innings. His day was marred only by a Pipers (14-19, 6-8 MIAC) RBI double in the fourth.

Carleton tacked on its other two runs in the sixth. A throwing error by the Hamline catcher on a throw down to third allowed Ryan Chang to score, and Iyer picked up another RBI base knock two batters later.

Chutkow finished off his second complete game of the season, with a scoreless fifth through seventh frames. Overall, the righthander allowed only one run and struck out four to take his pitching record to 3-2.

Iyer led a 10-hit attack with his 2-for-3 day and two RBI. Will Schnepf was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and John Hurtubise was the other multi-hit Knight with a 2-for-3 performance with a double. The Knights played a clean defensive game and benefitted from five Hamline errors.

Game 2
Carleton's first three batters of the contest knocked singles to score the game's first run and another came across after an RBI fielder's choice. However, Hamline strung together three free passes and three doubles in the bottom half of the first to score five times and earn the lead.

Carleton got a run back in the third, but in the fifth the Knights committed a pair of two-out errors in the bottom of the frame, and Hamline took advantage with a pair of timely hits to push three more tallies across for a 9-3 lead.

A big eighth inning offered hope for the Knights, as Iyer and Hurtubise doubled and Rice tripled to score two, then pinch hitter Brayden Stark screamed a line drive to left that drew a diving catch from Finn Melchior and allowed Rice to score on the tag-up. However, Hamline put the game to bed in the bottom half with six runs to salvage their split.

Jackson Corcoran threw 3.2 relief innings and allowed only one earned run. Zach Gordon followed him with 2.1 innings of 1-run ball. Iyer had a 3-hit game and was joined in the multi-hit club by Sam Gossard, Schnepf, and Chutkow.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton takes some much-needed time off from their tightly packed schedule before concluding the home portion of their MIAC schedule against crosstown rival St. Olaf College on Saturday, April 27. First pitch for game one on Senior Day is set for 1:00 p.m. at Mel Taube Field.
