NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Carleton College junior
Luke Harris was selected to the 2023-24 Men' Basketball Academic All-America Team selected by College Sports Communicators (CSC) for his excellence in the classroom as well as on the field. The point guard earned third-team honors on top of his earlier Academic All-District selection.
Only 0.3 percent of all NCAA and NAIA men's basketball players earned Academic All-America recognition this year. Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.50, and have played in 90 percent of their team's games or have started at least 66 percent of their team's games to be considered for Academic All-District. A select group of those that receive the district-level award advance to the All-America ballot which is voted on by CSC members.
This year's Academic All-America list for Division III men's basketball includes 16 players, with five tabbed to the first team, six on the second team, and five more on the third team. Harris is 1 of 4 juniors among that group, with the rest being seniors or grad students.
An economics major, Harris was previously named to the NABC All-District 1st team as well as the D3hoops All-Region IX team for his play on the court. He was named by league coaches as the MIAC Offensive Player of the Year. He led the conference in both scoring (20.3) and steals (2.04) to become only the second MIAC player in the 21st century to complete such a feat.
In addition to his scoring output, Harris collected 5.7 rebounds per game and doled out 3.4 assists per contest. He was 1 of only 4 players across NCAA Division III to average at least 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 2.0 steals per game during the 2023-24 campaign. Harris had 14 games of 20 or more points, including three games with 30-plus points. He is already the 14th leading scorer in Carleton history.
Harris joins Josh Wilhelm (in 1999) as the only Carleton men's basketball to receive Academic All-America recognition. Carleton student-athletes have now earned the Academic All-America Award a total of 38 times overall, including 11 first-team selections, 19 second-team picks, and 8 third teamers (see full list of Carleton honorees below.) Harris is the third Knight to be added to that list this academic year, joining Justin Crawmer (men's soccer) and Michael Carey (football) this fall.
