Bats kept in check as Knights swept at Concordia-Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – After averaging more than 8.1 runs per game over the last eight contests, the offense for the Carleton College baseball team suddenly went quiet as the Knights were swept in a doubleheader at Concordia College-Moorhead by scores of 3-1 and 11-1 (7 inn).

Game 1
Carleton (8-17, 5-7 MIAC) struck early, as Sam Zacks reached on an error to begin the contest, swiped second, and scored on Ryan Chang's double of the centerfield wall.

Starting pitcher Ananth Iyer kept the Cobbers (10-16, 7-5 MIAC) scoreless as the game flew through the front four innings.

Carleton was held to one run despite cracking a handful of flyballs to the warning track, with the Concordia outfielders reeling in the hard contact.

In the fifth, the hosts loaded the bases via a pair of free passes and a single. With two out, designated hitter Ben Shumansky split the left-center gap for a three-run double to spot the Cobbers a 3-1 lead. Carleton was unable to find a spark in the final innings and dropped the first half of the twin bill.

Jacoby Nold threw 7.0 innings of three-hit ball for the home team, striking out five. Iyer also threw a complete game but received a hard-luck loss despite only conceding three hits.

Game 2
Concordia broke out to an early lead on a David Dorsey RBI triple in the bottom of the first, but Steve Antrim offered a resounding response in the top of the second with a no-doubt home run to left field. It was

Antrim's big fly was his second in less than a week and the fifth of his career.

That was the final highlight for Carleton, as Dorsey broke the tie with a 2-RBI single up the middle, and the Cobbers continued to extend their advantage over the ensuing frames, building an advantage too great for Carleton to surmount to earn the sweep.

Carleton managed only four hits in the contest, but Chang reached each time he stepped to the plate, drawing three walks in his three plate appearances for a rare "0-for-0" day.

Starting pitcher Sam Chutkow limited Concordia for three innings but concluded with 5.0 innings pitched and seven runs allowed. Alex Rudquist hurled 5.0 frames of 1-run ball to earn the win for Concordia.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton returns home for a Saturday doubleheader against Augsburg University on April 20. First pitch for game one is set for 1:00 p.m.
