Missed chances doom Knights in opener, but they rally late for split with Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Sam Chutkow's four-hit day helped the Carleton College baseball team earn a split with Macalester College. The visitors took the opener 6-3, but the Knights rallied for an 11-7 victory in game two.

"I'm really proud of the resilience we showed throughout the day and especially late in game two," said Carleton head coach Alec Holcomb. "Awesome start by Ryan Antrim holding us in the game before the bats heated up and Ryan Chang closing the door again."

Game 1
Carleton (8-15, 5-5 MIAC) stranded 12 baserunners, including nine in scoring position. The Knights left the bases loaded in the first, fifth, and sixth innings. Those missed opportunities ultimately doomed the home team as Macalester (6-21, 2-10 MIAC) rallied for the 6-3 victory.

Carleton jumped out to an early lead, plating two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Sam Zacks had a leadoff single and stole second base. Sam Gossard followed with a RBI single down the left field line and would come around to score thanks to a single from John Hurtubise.

Nathan Barnhart coaxed a leadoff walk in the bottom of the second and came around by way of singles from Gossard and Chang, handing the home team an early 3-0 advantage.

The Scots trimmed the Knights' lead with a run in the top of the fourth, then moved ahead with three more tallies in the sixth. During that frame, Macalester put the first two batters aboard, and a throwing error by the Knights allowed one run to score. Moments later Stephen Paulsen's two-run single gave the Scots a 4-3 lead.

Macalester tacked on two more in the seventh with a two-run homer from Bowman Wingard.

Zacks, Gossard, and Chutkow each had a game-high two hits.

Will Schnepf pitched a solid 5.0 innings for the Knights, yielding a run on two hits with five striekouts and four walks. Zacks took over in relief and was solved for five runs (four earned) over 2.0 innings on the bump.

Ben King picked up the victory for the Scots in his 5.0 inning start, striking out six and relinquishing three Knights' runs on nine hits and three walks. Jacob Posner earned the save thanks to 1.1 hitless innings of work.

Game 2
After both starting pitchers faced the minimum over the first two innings, Macalester plated a trio of two-out runs in the top of the third and added another tally on a bunt single in the fifth.

Carleton, which had been limited to only one hit over the front four innings finally did some damage in the home half of the fifth. Hurtubise led the frame off with a single through the left side, and Ananth Iyer followed with his first career home run, a two-run shot down the left-field line.

In the sixth, the Knights tallied three more runs to take a 5-4 lead. Singles by Steve Antrim, Iyer, and Chutkow plated the first run, and a two-out Macalester error allowed two more runners to score to give the host a momentary 5-4 advantage.

Carleton surrendered the lead in the top of the seventh, committing two throwing errors leading to three unearned runs and a 7-5 deficit. Steve Antrim's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning trimmed the margin in half.

With the bases loaded in the eighth with one out, Gossard stepped to the plate. Possessing a 13-game hit streak but 0-for-4 so far in the contest, the sophomore delivered a clutch single to score Chutkow and Barnhart, giving the Knights the 8-7 lead. Chang followed with a two-run double, and a Macalester miscue permitted an insurance run to score.

There was no late comeback by the Scots, who went down 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Chutkow and Iyer were the lone Knights with multi-hit games in the nightcap.

Ryan Antrim pitched the first 7.0 innings for the Knights, striking out four and allowing seven runs (only three earned) on nine hits and two walks. Chang retired all six batters he faced, four via strikeouts, in picking up the win in relief.

Cam Scholl earned the start for the Scots and allowed five runs over his 6.0 innings of work. Matt Rade struggled out of the bullpen outing, conceding five runs over 1.1 frames to absorb the loss.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton is scheduled to visit Concordia College-Moorhead for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 17.
