GRANVILLE, Ohio – Carleton College first-year Hailey Westrup and senior Brenna Russell competed at the NCAA Region 1 Diving Championships this weekend. The former notched a fifth-place finish on the on the 1-mter board and a 10th-place result on the 3-meter competition. The latter took 10th out of 29 divers on the lower height and ended up 18th on the higher board.
 
Westrup posted a score of 394.85 off the 1-meter board, while Russell tallied 373.75 points during the 11-dive competition.
 
Westrup was 11th after her first four dives but gradually climbed up the leaderboard. Two dives later, she was in sixth place, a position she held until the 10th round. That is when Westrup posted her highest score of the day, 43.20 on an Inward 1 1/2 Somersault Pike (403B), and took over fifth place.
 
Meanwhile, Russell was 17th after six dives but like Westrup began moving up the leaderboard down the stretch. The senior was still 15th after eight dives, moved up to 12th during the 10th round, and closed Day 1 of the meet with her best score of the session, 40.95 on a Reverse 1 1/2 Somersault Tuck (303C).
 
The Knights were unable to replicate that same success on Saturday as regional stacked with quality divers made moving up the leaderboard difficult.
 
Westrup's top 3-meter score came on a Forward 2 1/2 Somersault Pike (105B), resulting in 43.20 points. Russell closed the competition with her best dive, a Back 1 1/2 Somersault 1 1/2 Twist Free (5233D) that netted her 42.00 points.
                                                                                           
While this was Westrup's debut at the regional level, this was Russell's third consecutive trip to the regional meet. In 2022, she placed 13th on the 1-meter board and 23rd in the 3-meter competition. Last year, she was 23rd on the 3-meter board and sixth at the 1-meter height.
 
Westrup's 1-meter result puts her in contention for 1 of the region's 8 bids when the 29-diver field for nationals is released via NCAA.org on Monday.
