HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The No. 39-ranked Carleton College women's tennis team started the competition portion of its Spring Break slate with a 7-2 victory over Frostburg State University, a NCAA Division II program.
Amelia Asfaw,
Mary Hose, and
Ryann Witter each won in both singles and doubles.
Katerina Smiricinschi and Witter got Carleton (7-0) started with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. The Bobcats (5-6) leveled the match with an 8-3 win at the second slot before Asfaw and Hose pushed the Knights back in front with their 8-7 (7-3) triumph at No. 1 doubles.
Kiley Pickens was the first Knight to win in singles, improving to 7-0 this season after prevailing 6-1, 6-1 at the fifth slot. Witter followed soon after with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 result at No. 6 singles.
Asfaw added a 6-0, 6-3 win atop the lineup, with Hose following with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles.
Miriam Shteyman trailed 2-1 early in the opening set at No. 4 singles but won five consecutive games en route to a 6-2, 6-3 victory that lifted her record to 6-1 this season.
The final result of the day went into the Frostburg State column by a 7-6 (9-7), 6-3 tally at No. 3 singles.
Up Next for the Knights
Carleton will face Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) on Wednesday, March 20 with a scheduled start time of 10:00 a.m. EDT / 9:00 a.m. CDT. The Knights will then play Grinnell College, George Fox University, and No. 37 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Thursday through Friday, respectively.
