BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Seven members of the Carleton College football team received all-conference recognition as the MIAC coaches handed out their end-of-season awards. Leading the way were first-team selections for wide receiver
Tyler Dimond and defensive back
Henry Detmer. Meanwhile, quarterback
Jack Curtis, offensive lineman
Patrick Shobe, defensive linemen
Luke Sugalski and
Kevin Xiong, and kicker
Marcus Merkelbach each took home all-conference honorable mention.
Dimond finished the regular season seventh among MIAC players with 64 receptions, fifth among that group with 989 receiving yards, tied for fifth with 12 touchdown receptions, and seventh at 15.5 yards per catch. He had five games with at least 100 receiving yards, including a 12-catch, 282-yard, 4-touchdown performance against Gustavus Adolphus, an outing that fell only three yards shy of the school record for receiving yards and was the second-most by a NCAA Division III receiver this season (and seventh among all NCAA players). Dimond is the first Carleton wide receiver to be a first-team All-MIAC pick since Matt Frank in 2008.
Detmer was voted to the first-team defense for the second consecutive season. He was fourth among MIAC players by collecting 83 tackles during the regular season. Detmer was third in the league after accumulating 51 solo stops, and he tied for seventh with 32 tackle assists. He totaled 6.0 tackles for loss, second-best among conference defensive backs, and forced two fumbles, tied for most among MIAC players.
Despite missing time due to injury, Curtis finished fourth in the MIAC with 2,322 passing yards and 22 touchdowns tosses. He had four games with at least 300 passing yards, including a pair of 400-yard contests. He threw multiple touchdown passes in five games, including a MIAC record-tying seven scoring strikes in the win over Gustavus Adolphus.
Shobe was 1 of only 3 first-years to garner any level of all-conference recognition in 2024. He appeared in eight games overall, including five starts. Shobe was flagged only once for a penalty and was responsible for only one sack this season.
Sugalski started all 10 games along the defensive line and collected 4.0 sacks this season, tied for 18th among MIAC players during the regular season. He had 7.5 tackles for loss, tied for 20th in the conference. Sugalski totaled 26.0 tackles on the season and blocked a field goal.
Kevin Xiong also started each game on the defensive line, registering 29.0 tackles along with a team-high three quarterback hurries. He recovered two fumbles and blocked a field goal in the season opener.
Merkelbach, who was an All-MIAC pick in 2023, was third on the Knights in scoring with 36 points, which ranked him sixth among MIAC kickers. He finished the year 24-of-26 on extra points and 4-of-7 on field goals. Merkelbach also handed punting duties for the Knights and landed 11 of his 57 punts inside the 20-yard and boomed 11 punts at least 50 yards, including a 65-yarder against Concordia-Moorhead.
