Knights win five times at Cows, Colleges, and Contentment Classic

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College women's swimming & diving team won five events at the season-opening Cows, Colleges, and Contentment Classic. The Knights raced against Luther College and St. Olaf College, while the diving competition included those three schools plus St. Cloud State University, a NCAA Division II program. Team scores were not kept.

"While the team has had a couple of unofficial racing opportunities early season, today was a great chance to go head-to-head with the Oles and Luther as well as check our training progress over the last four weeks," said Carleton interim head coach Brooke Plotz. "The meet was about putting in best efforts and racing for that initial result or time of the season. I enjoyed witnessing the team's consistent, positive, and competitive energy throughout the meet."

Nina Schwab turned in the top performances on both diving boards. In her collegiate debut, she posted NCAA Championship qualifying scores of 437.50 on the 1-meter board and 415.60 on the 3-meter board. Her score on the higher board already ranks No. 2 in recorded Carleton history, while the lower board score comes in at No. 3 in team annals.

Hailey Westrup took second on the 1-meter board with a score of 386.10 and was third at the 3-meter height after tallying 368.60 points.

"We have been training the DD capped dives mostly up until this point with a few of the optional dives sprinkled in," said Carleton diving coach Gabe Kortuem. "Today was the first meet and first opportunity to put all 11 dives together.  This championship list format is challenging to put together for the first meet of the year, however, the divers responded well. The jump work and entry work we have been focusing on went well, and we can expect improved performances as their optional training intensity increases over the next few weeks. Nina had a great first college meet and was able to showcase her unique talent. Her hard work and commitment to improvement is exciting to watch but also inspiring for opponents and teammates to continue working for challenging dives."

During the swimming portion that was held at Northfield Middle School, the Knights won the 200-yard medley relay as Grace Hou, Emma Yao, Daya Tucker, and Zoe Morton prevailed with time of 1:51.53.

Hou later won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.55.

Chelsea Anderson secured the other event victory for Carleton, prevailing in the 500-yard freestyle with a winning time of 5:27.63. That was good for a nearly 6-second margin of victory. She also registered a second-place result in the 200-yard freestyle at 2:02.43.

Morton turned in the Knights' other runner-up result, taking second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 55.59.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton heads to Macalester College for a dual meet in St. Paul, Minn., on Saturday, Nov. 9.
