Game Recap: Baseball |

Knights swept in games moved to Saint John's

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Carleton College baseball team dropped both ends of its MIAC-opening doubleheader against Saint John's, falling by scores of 7-4 and 11-0 (8 inn.). Due to wet field conditions at Mel Taube Field, the games were moved to the turf field at SJU's Becker Park, but the Knights played both contests as the home team in the scorebook.

Game 1 Recap
Saint John's 7, Carleton 4

The Johnnies (13-8, 4-0 MIAC) led 2-0 before Carleton (4-9, 0-2 MIAC) scratched out a run without the use of a hit during the bottom of the third inning. Aaron Rice (So./Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy) walked, advanced to second on a throwing error, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and came home on Sam Zacks' (So./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier) RBI groundout.

After Saint John's widened the margin to 5-1, the Knights scored three times in the home half of the sixth inning. Sam Chutkow (Fy./Needham, Mass./Needham) delivered a two-out, two-run double to left, and Ryan Chang (Fy./Alameda, Calif./The College Preparatory School) followed with a RBI triple to right center.

The Johnnies scored two more times in the top of the seventh and held off a Carleton rally in the final frame to secure the 7-4 result.

AJ Staff (Sr./Bainbridge Island, Wash./Bainbridge) absorbed the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) over 5.2 innings.

Game 2 Recap
Saint John's 11, Carleton 0

The Carleton bats were handcuffed by a trio of Johnnies' hurlers as the Knights collected only two hits: a two-out double by Jack Hommeyer (So./Bronxville, N.Y./Suffield Academy) in the second inning and a leadoff single by Sam Gossard (Fy./Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) in the third.

Saint John's scored three runs in the third inning, five times in the seventh, and three more runs in the eighth. Of the Johnnies' 11 runs, 10 of them came with two out.

Zacks got the starting nod and took the loss after allowing three runs over 3.0 innings on the bump. Will Schnepf (Fy./Dallas, Texas/Parish Episcopal) was the most effective hurler for Carleton, tossing 2.0 scoreless frames of 1-hit relief.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton is slated to visit Macalester College for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12.
