Will Schnepf twirls 6.0 scoreless innings as Knights top Caltech

TUCSON, Ariz. – Will Schnepf (Fy./Dallas, Texas/Parish Episcopal) pitched 6.0 scoreless innings and Ryan Chang (Fy./Alameda, Calif./The College Preparatory School) had three hits, including a home run, as the Carleton College baseball team registered a 7-3 victory over Caltech on Monday.

Schnepf scattered four hits—all singles—and two walks while striking out six batters en route to his first collegiate victory. Caltech (5-11) scored 18 runs against Luther College earlier in the day but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position while Schnepf was on the hill.

After a slow start to the season, the bats have started to wake up for Carleton (2-5), which pounded out a season-best 16 hits, including multi-hit performances by six Knights.

Steve Antrim (Jr./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) singled with one out in the top of the first inning, stole second, and advanced to third on the first of three hits in the game for Ananth Iyer (So./Redmond, Wash./Overlake). Jack Hommeyer (So./Bronxville, N.Y./Suffield Academy) followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home the initial run of the game.

Carleton double its advantage in the third inning. Iyer doubled and scampered home on the first of two singles by Aaron Rice (So./Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy).

Chang's two-run double highlighted a three-run fifth inning, and he added an insurance run with an opposite field homer to start the top of the eighth. Antrim's sacrifice fly later in the frame accounted for Carleton's final run.

The Beavers finally solved the Knights pitchers for three tallies in the bottom of the eighth, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Schnepf lowered his team-leading ERA to 1.64. He now has 17 strikeouts over his first 11.0 innings on the bump. Braden Sebesta (Sr./Spring, Texas/John Cooper School) picked up three Ks during his 2.0 innings of work, and Jake Stern (Fy./Potomac, Md./Churchill) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Sam Zacks (So./Glencoe, Ill./New Trier), Hommeyer, Luke Mager (Sr./Berkeley, Calif./Berkeley) had the other two-hit games for Carleton.
