Knights fall behind early in loss to Wesleyan

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Carleton College baseball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 14-4 loss to Wesleyan University (Conn.) on a windy day at the Kino Sports Complex.

Matthew Karbowski (Fy./Gilberts, Ill./Hampshire) worked out of a jam in the first inning but was not as fortunate in the second frame as the Cardinals (5-5) solved him for five runs (only one unearned).

The Knights (2-6) got one run back in the third inning when Steve Antrim (Jr./Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) dropped a single into right field to score Jake Stern (Fy./Potomac, Md./Churchill). Carleton added two more tallies in the fourth, sending the Wesleyan starting pitcher to the showers. Meanwhile, Karbowski faced the minimum over those same two frames to keep Carleton within reach at 5-3.

Unfortunately, the Knights' fourth error of the game helped the Cardinals score two more times in the fifth inning. Wesleyan then pulled away thanks to a run in the sixth, a five-run seventh, and an insurance run in the eighth.

Karbowski collected nine strikeouts during his 5.0 innings on the mound, yielding two earned runs.

Antrim, Ryan Chang (Fy./Alameda, Calif./The College Preparatory School), Kai Oishi (Jr./New York, N.Y./Trevor Day School), Aaron Rice (So./Evergreen, Colo./Colorado Academy), and
Ananth Iyer (So./Redmond, Wash./Overlake) were each credited with two hits in the game for Carleton.
